About the Summer Assignment
In preparation for the AP Human Geography course, is a mandatory summer assignment. The summer assginment consists of two parts: (1) A skills analysis and (2) a map test. The skills analysis and map test elements will count as a test grade in the first quarter. The purpose of the skills analysis is to introduce provide information and an opportunity for reflection about the skills needed to be successful in AP. The purpose of the map test is for students to master with key countries and regions of the world. AP Human Geography asks students to analyze global trends and patterns, utilizing many maps and graphs to display information. The more students know about location of countries and regions around the world, the easier it will be to learn and apply the information in the course.
Due Dates
Learning Maps/Geography.
Knowing the locations of countries and geographic features is a key foundational element of this course. Time must be invested in learning this information: Regions, Countries, Major Cities, Major Geographic Features & 50 States (coming soon). Skills Analysis Essay. HOW TO...
There are five sections students must complete. With each reading there is an activity the students must print off and complete. All activities must be completed, put into a folder and be ready to be submitted/signed off in Mr. Grether's Classroom (All of these assignments can also be found @ APHuG.MrGrether.com in the Modules Section). All of the reflections can typed in the same document. Separate each with a bolded header. Example:
PART 1: Time Management

How to Structure the Writing: Nonfiction writing is well structured, trying to prove a point with elaboration and evidence. Do not worry about creativity, instead but instead seek to write in the following format:
Thesis…Key Point … Because… Example… Therefore.
The thesis is a restatement of the question. The first key point is… This is because… An example of this is… The example relates because… The second key point is… This is because… An example of this is… This example connects/demonstrates this by… Therefore, this is how a thesis and proper structure leads to excellent non-fiction writing.

- Key Point: One sentence that gives tells a main, supportive idea.
- Because: This is a 2-3 sentence elaboration that address the “Because” or “Why”
- Example: This is a 2-4 sentence section that gives a specific, real world situation or scenario that shows the key point in action.
- Therefore: A one sentence conclusion that reconnects to the Thesis.

- PART 1: TIME MANAGEMENT

- Activity: Download and print the Time Sheet at Time.APHuG.Me . After completing the reading, think about the upcoming school year. Make a list of all the activities you plan to participate in on a regular basis (Classes, sports, religious activities, music lessons…) Fill out the Time Sheet with these events, filling in them in on the appropriate day and time they will take up.
- Reflection Writing: AP Classes require an increased amount of reading and studying. In the paragraph format described on the front page, discuss the following topics. Each bullet point is one paragraph. The writing must also provide 2 quotes (with page references) to support your claims as well as specific examples from your life.
- What time slots you will have each week for reading/studying?
- What problems do you anticipate facing with managing the increased workload?
- What tool(s) from the reading will you use to help keep track of the required work for the course?
- PART 2: LIFESTYLE

- Reflection Writing. AP Courses require an increased amount of time and effort to master a larger amount of information in a shorter amount of time. Success in advanced academics requires healthy lifestyle choices. The writing must also provide 2 quotes (with page references) to support your claims, as well as specific examples from your life.

- PART 3: THE BRAIN & LEARNING

- Reflection Writing. In complete sentence/paragraphs, discuss the following topics. The writing must also provide 5 quotes (with page references) to support your claims as well as specific examples from your life.
- The Learning Process. Is the way the brain stores information similar or different from what you had previously thought? Explain.
- As a learner, previously how did you “study” (aka: attempt to store new knowledge into your head). Based on this reading, what will you change or what new strategy will you attempt to become a better learner?
- APHuG is designed to teach students new skills and grow their academic abilities. What other struggles or challenges do you anticipate facing academically in approaching your first AP Class?

- Activity: The reading will guide students through an example of how to read and take notes at a college level. Aquire a 5 Subject Notebook (that will be used in class). Complete the activities built into the Part 4 Reading at the front of the notebook.
